Zeno - Voltumna
The Zeno di Voltumna is a fresh and juicy red wine that comes from the meeting of Sangiovese and Pinot Noir. The vines grown with biodynamic practices are found in the Florentine province of Mugello, at 300 m.s.l.m where the soil is purely clayey. The two vines having two different maturation times have two different fermentations. They then refine together in steel for two years. Zeno smells of wild berries. The sip is fleshy, pleasant, with good flavor and freshness that makes it the ideal wine for the table.
Service
We taste Zeno at a temperature of 16/18 ° in ballon glass. Wine to drink immediately. It is advisable to keep it in a horizontal position in a cool, damp and dark cellar.
Pairings
Wine that is excellent as an aperitif, with salami appetizers, to try with a baked pasta.
Cellar: Voltumna
Voltumna is an agricultural cooperative based in the Florentine province of Mugello Valdisieve. on the Tuscan Apennines, where the soil is purely clayey The cooperative manages a few hectares of Sangiovese and two small plots of pinot noir in the middle of the wood, producing wines that are still, good and cheap. In 2012 they took over the reins of the cooperative Marzio Politi and his wife who were already working inside it. First of all they decide to give it the name "Voltuman" as the Etruscan divinity of the earth and the soil, protector of the wine, from whose name derives the word "fortune". Later, helped by Michele Lorenzetti di Macea, they decided to cultivate the vines in a biodynamic regime, in total respect of nature and its places, following the rhythms of nature. In the cellar spontaneous vinification in steel without temperature control, malolactic in wood, aging in barriques of various stages inherited from neighboring companies but in the process of replacement with larger barrels, no filtration or clarification before bottling. The production is very limited; for now on the 10 thousand total bottles, among which Marcello on yeasts are distinguished, a sparkling wine produced from Sangiovese and Pinot Nero grapes, and the Pinot Grigio produced with a long maceration on the skins.

Juicy but not stupid
This was my first encounter with the wines from Voltumna. The blend of Sangiovese and Pinot Nero is also new to me. I must say that I was positively surprised by the immediate energy and juicyness in this wine. It so bright and vibrating with a perfectly, highly tuned acidity, silky tannins and lots of Tuscan charm. The perfect trattoria wine as it goes just as well with a chicken-liver crostino or pici with ragù as it does with a peposo or a bistecca.
