Cellar: Jeaunaux Robin
The Jeaunaux-Robin company was founded in 1971 by Michel Jeaunaux, interrupting the traditional conferral of grapes to the great Maison of the area. Cyril Jeaunaux, son and current owner, took over the company in 2000, succeeding his parents. Cyril had had a strong bond with his grandmother, Paulette, owner of the company's first vineyards: it was she who took care of them before leaving them in the hands of his son Michel, but despite this he never completely left his vineyard and passed on all his know the grandson, from an early age. For Cyril, together with his wife Clémence, recovering this great inheritance was the culmination of a dream cultivated since he was a child, when he worked in the vineyard with his grandmother Paulette. Even today, says Cyril, the feeling of working in the vineyard is the thing that satisfies him the most, bringing him back, thanks to every gesture, to the memory of his grandmother and her childhood. It is precisely for this reason that Cyril immediately sought a way to better express his vineyards in a natural way, as his grandmother did; so in 2005 the company began to have an approach as sustainable as possible for the land, arriving today with organic certification. To give more life to its soils it has been using some biodynamic preparations for years in order to give a greater balance to its vineyards. Cyril recognizes in its area a strong mineral character given by the silica present in the soils that signs the wines of the Petit Morin Valley. But there is no shortage of limestone veins on the exposed sides of the hill where the king of limestone, Chardonnay, had wisely planted. In the cellar he works with used steel and barriques, trying to maintain a fresh and vibrant acidity and avoiding malolactic fermentation where possible. When Cyril looks at his land, he dreams of being a composer who is creating symphonies with what is in front of him. And it is precisely for this reason that we strongly believe that Cyril Jeaunaux, with his serene and dreamy expression, is a great interpreter of terroir. But it would be nothing without Clémence who for years and with love has been preparing her wonderful madeleines for breakfast.
