Cellar: Kerpen
The Kerpen family is located in Bernkastel-Kues, in the heart of Moselle, in one of the best areas for producing Riesling. Here the Kerpen grows Riesling for eight generations. Since 1988 the company is led by Martin Kerpen, also the oenologist, assisted by his wife Celia. Martin has tried in time to find his own personal style in order to produce wines that are recognizable in fact, his Riesling are clean, fresh and elegant with the typical minerality always present. All the vineyards are located on the steep slopes of the Moselle, on terraced terrain consisting of devonian stones that give the wine the remarkable mineral. The vineyards, many of them on foot, are distributed in various Moselle parcels, and the grapes are vinified individually to reflect the particular style of each vineyard. We have such vineyards in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, where sophisticated elegant wine products are, and with a fresh and delicate acidity. In Wehelener Sonnenhur with its wines with a great potential for aging. In the Graacher Himmelreich and in the Graacher Domprobst, which are among the most famous Bernkasteler Doctor and Wehlener Sonnenhur, who donate wines with the characteristics of nearby vineyards, namely elegance, structure and rusticity. Smaller parcels are cultivated in Bernkasteler Bratenhöfchen and Bernkasteler Johannisbrünnchen. In the cellar, Martin Kerpen makes all vinification in old barrels in the underground cellar, and to keep the freshness of the wines fermentation is slowed down by careful temperature control and filtration is minimal. Martin Kerpen is a member of the Bernkasteler Ring, an old producer company in the Moselle, which reduces yields as high quality as possible
