Cellar: Cantine Garrone
Located in the northernmost reaches of Alto Piemonte, in the picturesque village of Oira di Crevoladossola, Cantina Garrone represents the very essence of alpine heroic viticulture. Surrounded by the greenery of the Alps and blessed with constant sun exposure, the winery is led today by Roberto, Mario, Marco, and Matteo, who carry forward a family legacy now in its fourth generation. The heart of their production is Prünent, an ancient and noble clone of the Nebbiolo grape that finds its most authentic expression in this unique mountain terrain. With a winemaking history documented as far back as 1309, the winery’s foundation is built on culture, passion, and respect for an extreme landscape where vines thrive on massive stone terraces carved into the rock and secured by traditional dry-stone walls. The Garrone family’s philosophy is a tribute to heritage; their vineyards feature ancient vines, many of which are century-old and ungrafted (piede franco). These are cultivated using the traditional Toppia system—an indigenous pergola that follows the natural steepness of the mountain slopes. In this heroic context, every step of the process, from pruning to harvest, is performed strictly by hand. Beyond managing 11 hectares of estate vineyards, the winery plays a vital role in local land conservation by collaborating with small-scale growers. By carefully sourcing grapes from tiny, ancient plots that would otherwise face abandonment, the family preserves an invaluable historical heritage, turning these small "handkerchiefs of land" into a significant asset for their wines. Through meticulous vineyard management and low yields per hectare, Cantina Garrone ensures consistent high quality, with an annual production limited to 50,000–60,000 bottles. Every glass tells the story of family dedication and the strength of a unique Alpine landscape, where the harmony between man and nature produces wines of extraordinary elegance and longevity, honoring over seven centuries of Ossola’s winemaking history.
