Winery: Stein
The Stein family has been the custodian of the land, wine and related activities in Moselle since the distant 17th century, but it is only in the 20th century that they dedicate themselves exclusively to vineyards and wine. It was 1947, Heinrich Stein, recently returned from the war in which he was forced to participate, as an anti-Nazi, behind the Nazi lines, and meets the beautiful Erna, they marry and two children Ulrich and Peter are born. In those years Heirich was struck by the Palmberg vineyard, near the village of Sankt Adelgund. Heinrich begins to work on the Palmberg, one of the steepest and steepest terraces of the Central Moselle, there was no way to mechanize the work, the relationship was man-plant, all manual, but he said "I'm not interested in producing modest wines, I want to produce a special Riesling from a special place ”. Ulli, after studying biology, together with his brother Peter begin to work in the company with their father and are faced with the first battle to protect their territory. In 1971, the German government financed the planting of the old terraced vineyards to remodel the slopes, so that they could be partially mechanized. The Steins steadfastly refused to protect the heritage of the original 500-year old terraces and historic vineyards of Riesling massal selection. Today the grapes come exclusively from old vines, starting from the youngest of 40 years, most of them in the 70-80 years on a free footing and a small parcel called Alfer Holle 1900, 120 years old. Being custodians of the earth means taking care of it and they are aware of this: manual viticulture, without chemicals. In the cellar the vinifications take place spontaneously without sophistication and with low doses of sulfur. Stein's idea is to produce natural terroir wines with character, mineral depth, elegance and a naturally low alcohol content, which are produced with respect for people and respect for the environment. Ulli lives in a special house that he likes to call “der Gros Hotel Abgrund” or The Grand Hotel of the Abyss; a real hotel where old crazy friends are always passing by, bringing with them stories, music, art and culture in which wine is the element of the symposium. But on the other hand, Ulli describes his parents as follows: "they were wine freaks, and Riesling infected !!!" ... a pear tree cannot be born from an apple tree. Unmissable..
