Cellar: Lopez de Heredia
Bodegas López de Heredia is the oldest winery in the city of Haro, located in the heart of Rioja Alta. Founded by D. Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta at the end of the nineteenth century, today it has reached its fourth generation, while maintaining its family character, in the name of safeguarding the family tradition and the territory. The winery has 170 hectares of vineyards (Viña Tondonia, Viña Cubillo, Viña Bosconia), which enjoy the Atlantic-influenced microclimate in the Alta area of Rioja. The vines grown are the classic Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo for the red wines while, for the whites, Viura and Malvasía are used. The harvests take place manually and, in the cellar, fermentations take place with indigenous yeasts only, while the refinements take place in the barrels that they handcrafted with woods coming from the Apalaches Mountains, in the USA. Time seems to have stopped at López de Heredia, in fact, the wines are put on the market after years of aging. Robust, muscular wines, but which at the same time hide an acidic, mineral and savory vein without which they would lose not only their drinkability, but also their longevity.
