Producer Renaud Boyer

FRANCE, BURGUNDY

Renaud Boyer has been managing three hectares of family property in Mersault, in the heart of the Côte de Beaune, one of the most prestigious areas of Burgundy, since 2004. He works the vineyards of his uncle Thierry Guyot, a pioneer of organic and biodynamic agriculture since 1986, sharing a strong passion for natural viticulture. A rigorous and patient winemaker, Renaud has chosen to follow an uncompromising philosophy: he defines himself as a supporter of natural viticulture, without the use of added sulphites, and produces wines that faithfully reflect the progress of the vintage. His integrity is also evident in his labeling choices: in 2017, faced with the disappointment of the Appellation Commission regarding the atypicality of some of his wines, he rebottled his Saint-Romain, a historic and prestigious vineyard, as “SR” and on the label without an indication of AOC, proposing it as a “generic Burgundy”. Subsequently, the wine regained the AOC designation. Renaud’s parcels are located in Saint-Romain, Puligny-Montrachet and around Beaune. The harvest is manual, and the vinification is done with whole bunches, without the addition of sulphites. The Chardonnay vines, over 80 years old, are grown on white marl soils facing south-west, while the Pinot Noir vineyard is around 50 years old, with clay-limestone soils and a significant presence of lava limestone. The Saint-Romain Rouge, characterized by great aging potential, is pressed by foot, vinified with whole bunches and subjected to a maceration of around three weeks. The availability of bottles is very limited, offering enthusiasts an exclusive opportunity to taste its authentic and environmentally friendly wines.
