ALSAZIA

Alsace, a region located in the north-east of France, is an intertwining of French and German wine-making aspects that find their raison d'etre from the fact that in the last 130 years the region has changed nationality several times. About 97 KM long. It is about 4 km wide and extends from Strasbourg to Mulhouse and is divided into two areas, the Lower Rhine, located to the north, and the Upper Rhine, located to the south. In Alsace there is a cold continental climate with harsh and cold winters, and a rather low average annual rainfall, but the luck of Alsace is to be located between the eastern slopes of the Vosges mountains and the Black Forest, which protects it from rains. from the mists and north winds. The soils are of various kinds and mainly composed of clay, limestone with granite sediments, gneiss, sandy and schistose; from this derives the rather diversified character of Alsatian white wines. Alsace is an area consisting of 51 Grand Crus and all the Alsatian vineyards are full of medieval towns. The ampelographic base of Alsace is made up of white grape varieties such as Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris, Muscat à Petit Grains and Muscat Ottonel, Pinot Bianco and Sylvaner, little red wine made from Pinot Noir. Alsatian wines are marketed in special bottles, called Flutes, and generally bear the name of both the vine and the indication of the place of origin. Here the Rielsing is capable of giving fragrant wines, with a floral and mineral nose, elegant in addition to the richness of extracts and a lively acidity. Gewurztraminer is characterized by its broad, warm, spicy flavor and an intensely aromatic bouquet with notes of spices and musk. Another grape of the area is Pinto Gris, here called Tokay, which gives rise to robust, full and soft wines with a spicy bouquet. Muscat is present in the Petits Grains and Ottonel typologies from which fresh, light and fruity wines are obtained. According to the rules, a wine classified Alsace Grand Cru AOC must be produced with 100% of the vine indicated on the label, and must be obtained with one of the four authorized varieties. Only 3% of the entire production is classified as Grand Cru. In addition to white wines, Alsace also produces excellent sweet wines: Vendage tardive (late harvest) produced with Riesling, Muscat and Gewurztraminer, and Sèlection de Grainds Nobles (wines produced with grapes attacked by noble rot) obtained with the same vines attacked by noble rot. Of note are the excellent Cremant D’Alsace, sparkling wines made from grape varieties such as Pinot Bianco, Pinot Gris, Pinot Nero Auxerrois, Riesling and Chardonnay.
