ORANGE WINE

The Orange Wine wines are different from all the others: they are not white, nor red, but as the name says orange, although most of the time they are a beautiful bright amber color. The color derives from the particular vinification technique, which was born in Giorgia, cradle of wine, more than 5000 years ago. The technique consists in leaving the white grapes in contact with their skins for a period ranging from a few days to a few months depending on the grape variety used, and both the vinification and the aging take place very often in the typical terracotta amphorae . A vinification as used for red wines, which serves to make the wine much more complex both on the nose and on the palate, where we will have rather strong and impacting aromatic notes, with a tannic sensation on the palate, unusual if one thinks that it goes white grapes. The pioneer of Orange Wine in Italy, was certainly Josko Gravner, who is not satisfied with the production of his wines, decides to go to Giorgia to learn how to make wine according to local traditions, which consist in putting macerating wine in large amphoras of terracotta that remain buried in the earth for months or years. Take home some of those amphorae and start using them to make Ribolla Gialla. A wine that will give birth to the Orange Wine movement in Italy. Today among the best producers of Orange Wine we find: Terpin, Radikon, Podversic, Vodopivec, to stay in Friuli, while in the rest of Italy there are: Dettori, La stoppa, Bajola, and many others. Finally, it is recommended to taste them at a temperature of 14/16 °, and to open the bottle some time before putting it on the table. The pairing possibilities are extensive, combined with raw fish, exotic cuisine, red meat and game. In short, the Orange Wine wines are not for all palates, some love them others hate them.

The WAW Come Prima by Esencia Rural is a rosé wine macerated in terracotta amphorae of the typical varieties of La Mancha harvested and vinified together. The nose is balsamic with marked notes of eucalyptus and mentholated; on the other hand, pleasant spices such as black pepper arrive in the mouth. However, it is fresh with a volatile acidity present to give dynamism and drinkability.

Shun Minova's Jai Guru Deva is a wine that impresses with its aromatic note and light tannic texture. Obtained from a blend of white grapes. Spontaneous fermentation in concrete tanks with maceration on the skins for one month and aging partly in old acacia barrels and partly in steel. No addition of sulfur, no clarification or filtration. On the label a drawing by Ayumi Takahashi.

Harmoge by Walter De Battè is an energetic and mineral white wine obtained from a mixture of local white grapes. Spontaneous fermentation and maceration on the skins, from 4 to 8 days; while aging takes place in oak barrels for 15 months. A wine that is expressed on the nose with hints of candied fruit, notes of aromatic herbs, hints of resin and flint and sapid tones. On the palate the perfume is rich, soft, with great envelopment and minerality.

The Slatnik is an intense golden yellow color. The nose is complex, persistent, with hints of fruit, in particular peach and apricot, with notes of chocolate and floral scents. On the palate it is ample, opulent, greedy, slightly tannic, elegant and mineral. It closes long on notes of fruit.

Terpin's Quinto Quarto Bianco Sivi is a macerated white wine based on Pinot grigio. The nose has intense aromas of macerated fruit, citrus peel, and notes of spices, resin and acacia honey. On the palate it is dry, enveloping, full-bodied, with good freshness, and with a light tannic texture but absolutely delightful and drinkable.

Ribolla Gialla by Damijan podversic is an elegant and full-bodied orangewine that comes from the grapes of the same name that come from the vineyard located on Monte Calvario, just outside Gorizia. After fermentation, it ages in large barrels for 23 months and rests in the bottle for another 6 months before being put on the market. An amber-yellow colored wine with a complex nose of ripe fruit, hints of almond paste and resinous balsamic. On the palate it is powerful with excellent acidity and elegant tannic texture.

Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Grapes: Rebula.

Alcohol content: 13,5%.

Aging: 23 months in large and bottled barrels for another 6 months.
