Jura

The Jura is a small region where the vines are scattered through woods and meadows, and white wines dominate the production of these picturesque vineyards. The Jura is a verdant area where the terrains and weather conditions are very similar to those of Burgundy with which it borders on the West, with very hot summers and very stormy winters. The best vineyards are on steep slopes, facing south and south-east, where the terrain is made up of clay-plated Jurassic limestone. The best wines of the Jura are produced with native vineyards, such as the noble white berry cultivar named Savagnin, which is slightly aromatic with notes of nuts, almonds and coffee. Savagnin produces easy-to-drink wines, but also the famous and intense Vin Jeaune of the Jura, which has similar characteristics to Spanish Sherry, with its late-ripening grapes, its intense yellow color is given by oxidation with which is deliberately subjected to wine, which ripens under a flour of yeasts, in oak barrels for 6 years. In the area are also produced red wines based Pinot Noir, the rare and indigenous Trousseau with which also a nice rose. Jura also produces a Classical Spumante Method, which is part of the Appellation Crèmant du Jura, in addition to the famous liqueur vins also called vins de paille, so called because, according to tradition, they are made from grapes left on the strawberries. Among the best names of the Jura we find: Arbois AOC where are produced red wines based on Trosseau, Poulsard and Pinot Noir, and white wines with Savagnin and Chardonnay, and Château-Chalon AOC where they produce the best Vins Jaunes of the Jura. Among the distinguished producers are Andrè & Mireille Tissot, Pignier Père & Fils, Jacques Foret and Château d'Arlay.
