Galicia

Galicia is a region that is located in the northwest of Spain, on the Atlantic and bordering on Portugal. It is the smallest among the many Spanish wine districts. It is a region characterized by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, the heavy rainfall, the hilly landscape and the presence of rias, the narrow and long creeks that go into the coast. Production in Galicia did not allow great development in the wine sector in Galicia and only in recent years there are Galician wines outside the region. Traditionally, vineyards in Galicia are grown with the pergola system, on horizontal trunks of height above the shoulder, in order to allow for better soil exploitation and good batch ventilation. Cultivated vines are mainly white berries like Loureiro, Treixadura and Albarino. Areas that have obtained the DO (corresponding to the Italian DOC) are Rias Baixas, Riberio, Ribeira Sacra, Ferreiro, Valdeorras and Monterrei. The most famous denomination is certainly the Rias Baixas where the Albarino grape is cultivated, which is known in Portugal under the name of Alvarinho, which originates from an interesting white wine that makes acidity and white fruit aromas its points of strength. Wines of the name Ferreiro are so rich in acidity that is imposed on producers to make malolactic fermentation in order to make them lose some aggression.
