Producer Nika Bakhia
GEORGIA, KAKHETI
The Nika Bakhia winery is located in Georgia, in the village of Ananga, in the Kakheti area. Nika is a sculptor-architect who, having always had a passion for wine, in 2006 decided to become a winemaker, and to use the terracotta amphora, in Georgian Qvevri, for the refinement of his wines. Also in the same year, he creates the Qvevri Association, thus giving birth to the movement of wines in amphorae, which goes beyond the Georgian borders, becoming famous all over the world. Today it cultivates about 6 hectares of vineyards that border those of another important Georgian production company, Our Wine, with which it shares some plots in the Tsarapi and Akhoebi crus. In its vineyards we find the main autochthonous Georgian grapes: Saperavi, Rkatsiteli, Tavkveri, Khikhvi and Mstvane, which are cultivated with the utmost respect for the environment. In fact, Nika does not treat its vineyards with any chemical additives and uses only human energy and horse strength. The vinification takes place with long maceration on the skins inside the classic Qvevri and the same containers are also used for the refinements. The wines are literally the result of an all-family job where many of the labels are in fact also composed of the proper names of family members such as Nika Saperavi, Dato Noha, Tarie Luna and many others.
