Marko Tavčar is a small producer who bravely and stubbornly cultivates his vines in the Karst, in Kreplje (etymology which in Slovenian means Stone), near Dutovilje, Slovenia. This particular and magical land, where agriculture and with it viticulture have always been lived and interpreted in the sign of subsistence: being able to produce vegetables and fruit and, therefore, make wine from a difficult terrain, which is subject to very extreme atmospheric agents such as Bora (the cold wind of Russian origin) and the torrid summers, almost becomes a mission of worthy importance. Its wines come from two white grape varieties Vitovska and Istrian Malvasjia and one red grape, Teran; Tavcâr cultivates a total of 2 hectares located between Kreplje, Dutovlje and Gorjiansko, all cultivated with the utmost naturalness and respect for the environment and biodiversity. And the same commitment is lavished in the cellar, where there is the "natural" conclusion of the previous commitment. Krepljie is suited for whites: from a minimum of 60 cm of soil up to a maximum of 2 meters in some places, with an unstable trend that creates a lot of diversity between plant and plant, where some produce more, others less, because where there is little land the limestone rock emerges - the “pokarbonata” - in which the roots of Vitovska and Malvasia are wedged. The Terrano, on the other hand, needs a lot of soil and clays, to better express itself and is grown about 2 km away from Dutovlije and Tomaj. Another beautiful work by Marko is the one he has been carrying out for years now, in about 2000 square meters of land there are about 400 centenary plants ungrafted: we are in Gorjansko and this ancient farming system is called "liera", traditional of the area, with large spaces between plant and plant and between row and row. Once a lot of space was needed in the vineyard, as the crops were varied and as much space as possible had to be recovered. From this area his white Gorjansko is born. Marko has alert eyes and an iron soul, an exact transposition in his wines. Really special.
