Mythopia is a Swiss winery founded over 10 years ago by Romaine and Hans-Peter Schmidt in Sion, in the municipality of Arbaz. Hans Peter-Schmidt is an ecology professor and arrived in Valais from Dresden after setting up a research institute on viticulture and biodiversity and consulting several wineries across Europe. Their idea was to seek harmonization of ecosystems in agriculture and develop a high degree of biodiversity so that the vines draw all their energy from the depths of the soil and give the grapes character and aromatic fullness. All this was possible by renouncing synthetic products, and starting a business that led to planting trees and shrubs, fruit and vegetables among the rows and sowing flowers and weeds. Today in Mythopia we find 68 species of butterflies, over 180 species of plants and flowers, 200 m of hedges, in addition to plants of tomatoes, raspberries, blueberries, roses, potatoes, aromatic herbs, pumpkin, and onions, The 3 hectares of vineyards are located at more than 800 meters above sea level on shale and limestone mineral soils, mainly bred in Pinot Noir, Fendant, Sylvaner, Rèze and other traditional vines. In the cellar the fermentations are spontaneous and after multiple attempts it was possible first to reduce and eventually give up the sulphite. Mythopia wines are made only of grapes, some mountain air and a large dose of microbial biodiversity naturally contained in the flowering of the grapes.
