Producer Azienda agricola Barbacarlo

LUMBARDY

Lino Maga is a legend of the Oltrepò, and his name is inextricably linked to that of Barbacarlo. The winery was founded in 1896 by the ancestors of Lino, and called a hill where they had the vineyards, Barbacarlo, dedicating it to an old uncle called Carlo, in fact in the dialect of Pavia "beard" means Uncle Carlo. This red wine is obtained from the assemblage of Croatina, Uva Rara and Ughetta, typical grapes of Oltrepò Pavese, which are vinified in old oak barrels, without temperature control. The maturation takes place in the bottle, and if the fermentation has not been completely carried out in cask, it will carry with it a slight residual sugar that will give a carbonic nature that will make it caressing and different from year to year. Today Lino cultivates 17 hectares of vineyards composed of old centenary vines that rest on tufaceous-stony soils, cultivated without the use of chemical fertilizers and herbicides, using only a little 'sulfur. Lino Maga has long fought against the bureaucracy to have the monopoly of the Barbacarlo brand, which in the past was also exploited by adjacent farmers, but which produced a wine totally different from its own. After almost 30 years of battles with stamps, finally in 2014 he obtains from the Council of State the final sentence, which recognizes the Maga family the exclusive right to use the Barbacarlo sub-denomination on the label. Lino Maga also produces Montebuono, another cru made from croatina, rare and barbera grapes. It tells the tradition that was also tasted by Napoleon Bonaparte after the victorious battle of Marengo.
