Producer Villa Huesgen
GERMANY, MOSEL
Villa Huesgen is located in the heart of the Moselle, the largest Riesling vineyard in the world, where the steep vineyards rise on soils rich in minerals and gray slate. Villa Huesgen is a beautiful Art Nouveau house located in Traben-Trarbach. Designed by Bruno Möhring in the early 20th century at a time when this city was the second largest in Bordeaux only as a center of wine trade. The winery was founded in 1735 by Johannes Huesgen who bought some vineyards on the Moselle and began the production of wine. Generation after generation, we thus arrive at the ninth generation, and today Villa Huesgen is managed today by Adolph Huesgen VIII who brings a new perspective to the family business after spending ten years working for Robert Mondavi and stint at Yalumba, Tyrell, and Domaine Bertagna. Villa Huesgen today owns 65 hectares of vineyards cultivated entirely with Riesling and vines that reach seventy years. Adolph continues to buy new vineyards using the maps commissioned by Napoleone Bonaparte as a model. In the vineyard the harvest is carried out by hand with a rigorous selection of the bunches. Indigenous yeasts are used in the cellar for vinification, with fermentation lasting two or three months. The wines are aged in stainless steel tanks. Villa Huesgen produces exceptional Riesling that reflect tradition and terroir.
