Producer Fattoria Brena
TUSCANY
The history of Fattoria Brema is rooted in 1951, when grandfather Angelo purchased the land following thirty years of tireless peasant labor. Back then, life followed the rhythms of biodiversity: amidst grains, chestnuts, timber, and livestock, wine was born from the rows that bordered the fields, intended exclusively for family consumption. Today, that same land safeguards an ambitious project led by his grandson, Giancarlo Bucci. In 1999, alongside family friend Louis, Giancarlo decided to challenge nature by planting one of the world’s most noble and demanding grape varieties: Pinot Nero. Starting with the first two clones from Burgundy—the spiritual home of this variety—the vineyard has grown through meticulous care. Initially trained using the double arched cane (doppio capovolto) system to ensure a balanced distribution of sap, the vines were supplemented in 2014 with two additional clones trained in simple Guyot. The project reached completion in 2020 with the grafting of the final seven clones, bringing the vineyard to a total surface of 1.5 hectares, nestled on medium-textured sandy-clay soil with a perfect south-east exposure. Giancarlo’s production philosophy is a return to purity: no chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides. In this vision of symbiotic agriculture, sheep and geese act as natural weed control, fertility is provided by horses and cows, while bats and beneficial insects protect the clusters naturally. Giancarlo personally manages every stage of vineyard maintenance, rejecting "copy-and-paste" protocols or standardized technical consultations. The goal is a precise identity, shaped solely by what nature offers differently each year. The pivotal moment of the manual harvest often takes place at night or at the break of dawn, in profound silence, to preserve the integrity of the fruit. In the cellar, fermentations are carried out in distinct small batches with medium-short macerations, respecting the innate elegance of the grape. From this dedication, our wines are born: the Pinot Nero “Sopra”, officially released in 2017, and the exclusive “Sopra di Sopra”, a selection from the oldest vines produced since 2018 only in the best vintages. A wine that is not merely a product, but the story of a family and its territory.
