Catalonia

Catalonia is a vast region located in the north-east of Spain, along the Mediterranean coast, around the city of Barcelona, where 90% of all Spanish sparkling wine is produced. The vine was brought by the Phoenicians and the Carthaginians, and later the cultivation was improved by the Romans. An enigmatically complex and diversified region, with a dozen Denominations and over 300 wineries producing excellent red, white and sparkling wines. Among the main Denominations we find Penedes, where the famous Cava is produced, the classic Spanish method obtained from Parellada, Macabeu and Xarel-lo grapes. Other notable names are that of Tarragona, which also supplies grapes for sparkling wine bases, that of Conca di Barberà, where they produce wines with a fresh flavor and expressive aroma, that of Montsant, and above all that of Priorato. In the latter one produces some of the most interesting wines of Spain with grapes that come from vineyards that grow on steep slopes and slate terraces that are difficult to cultivate. Red grapes such as Mazuela, Cabernet, Syrah, Carinena and Garnacha are grown here.
