Burgenland

Burgenland is Austria's second wine-growing region and is on the border with Hungary. In Burgenland, which includes the areas of Neusiedlersse, Niusiedlersee-Hugelland, Mittelburgendland and Sudburgenland, more than a third of all Austrian wine is produced. The majority of the vineyards are located around Lake Neusiedl, a long stretch of water more than 32 km always shrouded in fog during the long and warm autumns, which climatically influences all the reason. In Burgenland, white, dry red and sweet wines are produced. Sweet wines are produced in the north-eastern part of Lake Neusiedl, using Welscheriesling grapes or Wiessburgunder or Neuberger or Traminer or Furmint, which are left to overripe and attack with noble rot. The sweet wines fall into the category Beerenauslese, Trockenbeerenauslese, and Ausbruch. The latter is produced with grapes attacked by noble rot, to which is added fresh must of partially botred grapes, in the model of the most famous Tokaji. The area also produces interesting Chardonnays and red wines based on local vines such as the Blaufrankisch, the Zweigelt and the St. Laurent. Among the best producers are Gut Oggau, Alois Kracher, Christian Tschida, Judith Beck, and Alex Koppitsch.

Christian Tschida's "Non-Tradition" is a fascinating example of how combining different parcels can create a unique and complex tasting experience. Grüner Veltliner grapes come from two distinctive soil types: one limestone and the other on a steep shale slope, both facing south-east and overlooking the lake. The decision to assemble the two wines led to a surprising result: an aromatic complexity and a layering of taste that offer a rich bouquet, with notes of fruit, spices and minerality. The final result is a symphony of flavors that demonstrates how two elements can come together to create something much greater than the sum of the individual parts, a true case in which 1+1 equals 3. A wine that invites to be discovered and appreciated in every nuance of it.

Naked White by Weingut Heinrich is a wine made up of almost 70% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Blanc and a few other white grape varieties from the eastern part of Lake Neusiedl. Spontaneous fermentation and maceration for one night, aging on its own fine lees for 14 months in large used oak barrels. The wine is finally bottled without filtration, clarification or addition of sulfur. Before tasting it, you need to shake the bottle a little and let the wine take a lot of air in the glass. A rather interesting Austrian rock wine.

Himmel auf Erden White Grande Cuvée by Christian Tschida proves to be a white wine that captures the essence of a unique terroir. With 70% Grüner Veltliner, 20% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Furmint, this blend comes from a careful selection of grapes, each with its own distinctive characteristics. Fermentation and maturation take place in large barrels, allowing the wine to develop aromatic complexity without overpowering its fresh and vibrant profile. The reworking of the label in 2022, curated by the young Viennese graphic designer Barbora Keherova, brings a touch of modernity and freshness to a wine that already celebrates tradition and excellence. The result is a wine that not only tells the story of its origin, but also invites you to live a sensorial experience that fully recalls the concept of "Himmel auf Erden".
