Travel in Friuli Venezia Giulia

The territory of Friuli Venezia Giulia is a predominantly mountainous area, and this explains why most of the production is concentrated around the cities of Udine, Gorizia, Pordenone and Trieste, in the eastern part of the region. Here, we find the Collio, and the eastern hills of Friuli, rich in clay soils that give life to great white wines. Further west is the area called "Carso" where the vineyards grow on marly soils overlooking the sea, mitigated by a mild and always fresh climate. In the plains, the denominations Lison Pramaggiore, Latisana, Aquileia and Annia, are located near the Mediterranean coast where the sandy soils prevail over the clayey ones. Friuli is certainly a region of great white wines obtained from vines such as Malvasia Istriana, Ribolla Gialla, Friulano (once called Tocai Friulano), Verduzzo, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio and Bianco, etc. Red berry vines stand out the Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, the Schioppettino, the Pignolo, the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Merlot. Also renowned is the production of sweet wines from grapes such as the rare Picolit and Verduzzo with which Ramandolo is obtained.
