Producer Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara
TUSCANY
Il Colombaio di Santa Chiara tells the story of a family deeply rooted in the beautiful lands of San Gimignano. It all began with Mario, who since the 1950s worked the fields with dedication and passion. From these roots, the company grew, initially focused on livestock and today proudly dedicated to winemaking. In 2002, driven by the passion of Alessio, the youngest of the three brothers, they decided to enter the world of wine. Alessio, then studying oenology, wanted to put his studies into practice, involving his older brothers, Giampiero and Stefano, in the journey. A few years earlier, they had purchased the Pieve di San Donato, along with the rectory and surrounding lands: there, their first small winery was born, the place where their passion began to transform into wine. Working side by side and experiencing the beauty of their land every day was a unique experience, supported by Mario’s expertise and guidance. They learned to let the land speak, listening to its vocation and enhancing the Vernaccia di San Gimignano, allowing the wine to tell its story with authenticity. The same philosophy guides their red wines: from Sangiovese, a historic local grape, to experiments with Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Everything is cultivated under certified organic farming, with the support of oenologist Nicola Berti, to preserve the richness of the land. From this commitment come deep and complex wines, capable of standing the test of time and capturing the freshness of a timeless landscape. The vineyards stretch over 22 hectares within the DOCG Vernaccia di San Gimignano, alternating Pliocene sands, clay, pebbles, and gravel with older cavernous limestone formations. A portion of the land is preserved as woodland, a testament to the respect for nature that guides every choice.
