THE WINES OF GORISKA BRDA

The Goriška Brda (Slovenian Collio) is the Slovenian area bordering on Italy, carved by an extraordinary beautiful landscape, where gentle hills are marked by an almost uninterrupted succession of vineyard terraces. An area with a tragic past, marked by the wars still living in the memory of the people of this land, and witnessed by the numerous cemeteries of war and shrine. The Goriška Brda vineyards enjoy a mild climate all year long, almost Mediterranean, because they are protected by the cold winds blowing north from the Julian Alps barrier and receiving the gentle breezes from the Adriatic Sea. But their luck is to grow on the famous Ponca, a crumbly and tender rock that is rich in minerals, allowing the roots of the vine to get deep in search of nourishment and water. Vineyards grown in the Goriška Brda are mainly white berries such as yellow ribolla, malvasia, friulan or jakot in slovenia, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot gray, white pinot, and do not lack red berries with the their fruity scents such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot and pinot black. All wines are produced in a firm version even if there is no spledide interpretations of classic spumante method obtained from the yellow riboll. The annual production of wine rarely exceeds 100 million liters. Wineries are all relatively young because, during the communist regime, every farm had to be self-sufficient, and grape cultivation was added to that of peaches and cherries, and livestock farming. Almost all the cellars are concentrated in the few kilometers that range from the Italian border to Gonjace within that part of Slovenia wedging in Friuli between Cividale and Cormons. Among the noted producers there is the embarrassment of choice, we point out to you: Movia, Cotar, Giorgio Clai, Kristian Keber and Marko Fon. If you are already in the draws we recommend the Vinska pot Goriških Brd, the Slovenian wine road for a great enogastronomic experience
